This will be our 6th move since the year 2000 and in each of these previous 5 moves we moved around boxes of our files and records. Going through these recently I realized that 9 year old credit card bills and 5 year old fund prospectuses (prospecti?) probably aren't needed anymore. Time to shop for a shredder. I didn't know that shredders are serious machines and can only be operated for a fixed time before needing to be powered down due to the motor and blades heating up so much. Since I had a lot of stuff to shred (6 standard size file boxes filled to the gills) I knew I wanted something with a long shred time and large sheet capacity. Enter the Staples 22 sheet cross cut shredder. This thing is awesome. It had an instant rebate at the store which pretty much cancelled out the enhanced warranty I got. Staples offers an 'anything goes wrong bring it back in' warranty which for shredders is a good idea. Moving parts + resistant objects = dead motors/broken gears.
In Washington we have 3 garbage cans; a recycling bin, a compost bin and a garbage bin for the rest of it. Our compost bin is 96 gallons = big and I filled that 3 times with the amount of cross cut paper I produced. Shredding lots of paper seems to unleash som
e of the noxious chemicals they use to make paper, smells like formaldehyde. Be sure to always shred in a well ventilated location.
